Mother and Children (2006)

Lino Engraving on Japanese Rice Paper (3/3)

26 x 59 inches

MAY 8 – 31, 2021

Radisson BLU Anchorage Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos

Art Clip Africa presents The Woman – an exhibition of prints, relief works and etchings that span over 40 years. The exhibition title is a play on the artist’s print titled The Man (1995), found in the collection of The Victoria and Albert Museum, London. The famous work features a nude figure male figure standing and pointing to his right is a woman and infant enclosed in a circular design, isolated from the entire frame. This large genesis-like piece reflects his Eurocentric influences and multi-cultural symbolisms. Female figures are frequently in conversation with Tayo Quaye’s narratives as seen in his Mother and Child, Bathers, and Tamba series. The artist’s elaborate play with symbolism coupled with his appreciation for women is a testament to his years working under and studying master artists such as Bruce Onobrakpeya and Yusuf Grillo. In this exhibition, we celebrate women as the protagonists of his prints, exploring themes of politics, family, fertility, and love.

The Woman by Tayo Quaye is the first of our monthly exhibitions that will hold at the Radisson Blu Anchorage Hotel, Victoria Island. This will be the first exhibition since his Tamba series in 2015 at the Rele Gallery where his paintings, depicting practices of female hygiene in Yoruba culture, came with great excitement in the art scene with critics comparing his daring imagery to that of feminist performance artists.
